EPA Refrigerant Handling Certification

The Federal Government of the United States requires all individuals who open a system or container holding a controlled refrigerant to be certified.  Congress gave authority to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to write the necessary regulations to implement the rulings in Section 608 of the Clean Air Act.  Persons who work on stationary equipment or use refrigerant designed for these systems can become certified by passing a proctored Section 608 examination.

To become certified a person must pass a CORE section of the exam plus one of the technical type sections.  They only need to pass the Types that apply to the work they are doing.

Type I technicians primarily work on small appliances.

Type II technicians primarily work on equipment using a high pressure refrigerant such as R-22, and includes residential and many commercial air conditioners and supermarket refrigeration.

Type III technicians primarily work on equipment using a low pressure refrigerant such as R-11 or R-123 and they are primarily very large chillers.

As an approved Chief Examiner for the Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration Institute (ARI) EPA Technician Certification Exam I am authorized to administer and proctor the certification testing.

I am a trained online instructor and am on the faculty of HCACReducation.net.  I am a nationally recognized Master Teacher and have developed and taught numerous programs specifically for Oklahoma apprentices, technicians and maintenance employees for over twenty years.

I provide a combination of online training, in class review and EPA testing.

The number of weeks of preparation needed depends upon the participant’s level of basic refrigeration knowledge.  If participant’s basic refrigeration knowledge is uncertain, the number of weeks of training can be decided after they take the assessment test, with a minimum of 3 weeks.

10 Easy Steps to Get Your People Tested

1. Enroll your participants with their name, an email address and the company name.

2. I send an email invitation to each to take an online practice/assessment test and send them a study manual.

3. Participants take the test, print off a copy of the test and their results as a study guide.  They are told which questions they missed but not the correct answers.  They are to research and find the correct answers. (The more they study the better their chances of passing the exam.)

4. Once all participants have completed the test and have had time to study, I send invitations to an online discussion group with instructions for participation.

5. In the discussion group I post resources and information and questions for them to answer two or three times a week.

6. Students are required to respond with answers and comments at least every 48 hours plus comments about the other student’s comments.

7. I respond to comments and student questions within 24 hours to the whole group.

8. If something warrants responding privately to an individual I respond by email.

9. Upon completion of 3 to 6 weeks of discussion group training and study, the participants are invited to retake a scrambled version of the practice test.  If they do not score well enough to assure a reasonable chance to pass the EPA exam, they may take some time to study and try the practice test again.

10. I come to your location on an agreed upon date to present a 3 hour review session and give the EPA Certification Test (2 hours).
